Elevate your career as a CILEX Lawyer
Demonstrate you have the senior experience, advanced expertise and the sustained professionalism it takes to be a leader within the legal sector.
What is a CILEX Lawyer?
A CILEX Lawyer is a highly qualified legal professional, just like a solicitor, but with expertise in a specific area of law.
This status proves to clients, colleagues, and employers that you’ve reached the top of your profession and are fully regulated to practise. As a CILEX Lawyer, you can work independently without restrictions in your specialist field – giving you the freedom to shape your career your way.
And the opportunities don’t stop there! Many CILEX Lawyers go on to become Partners, Coroners, Judges, and advocates in open court. Where will your journey take you?

Benefits of being a CILEX Lawyer
1. Specialist expertise
CILEX Lawyers focus on a specific area of law from early on, building deep knowledge and skills that make you invaluable to clients and employers.
2. Ongoing career support
Your journey doesn’t stop once you qualify. With exclusive job listings, career advice, and professional development, we help you take your career to the next level.
3. Respected credentials
CILEX Lawyer status is a mark of excellence, showing clients, colleagues, and employers that you’re a trusted legal professional at the top of your field. As a practising lawyer, you’ll also feature on the public Authorised Practitioners Register.
4. Business-ready skills
Beyond legal expertise, you’ll develop key business skills like client management, communication, and strategic thinking, making you a well-rounded legal professional who will be in demand from employers.
Route to becoming a CILEX Lawyer
You become a CILEX Lawyer through studying the CILEX Professional Qualification (CPQ), or the CILEX Graduate Qualification (CGQ) if you hold a UK law degree.
As you progress through the qualification, expanding your knowledge and practical expertise, you will gain membership credentials at each stage of your journey, allowing you to pause or stop your studies at any point, and still get recognition for your achievements.
Upon completing all your assessments, qualifying work experience portfolio, and practice rights (if required), you’ll achieve CILEX Lawyer status and be able to practise unsupervised in your specialism.
